Châteauneuf-du-pape Vintage 1989

Our vintages : Châteauneuf du Pape

The AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most beautiful AOCs in the Rhone Valley. It is famous for its red wines but also offers magnificent white wines. Quality has no price! This is why on each vintage all the grape varieties planted in our plots allow us to best express the terroir that is ours.

An exceptional climatic situation, exceptional vintage, so we can summarize the 1989 wine season in Châteauneuf du Pape.

After a mild and dry winter, the region of Châteauneuf du Pape benefited from a particularly wet April, allowing a good start of the vegetation and the creation of a water reserve that proved decisive, in view of this summer’s drought.

Indeed, from May to August, the total rainfall did not exceed 30 mm, and the sum of the temperatures equaled the records established in 1947, which was a very high vintage, always present in the wine-making memory. This ideal weather for the vines has fostered a sanitary state and optimal maturity of the grapes.

The very favourable climatology led to an advance of about ten days for the grape harvests which began from 5 September for the white grape varieties and 11 September for the red grape varieties.

The first vintages reflect the impeccable quality of the harvest.

Intense and sustained colors, having benefited from the low yield in juice, perfumes and aromas developing all their nuances due to the good health of the harvest and a winemaking without problem. Finally tannins and a length in the mouth that are the expression of climatic conditions perfectly adapted to the terroir and grape varieties of the appellation Châteauneuf du Pape.

The balance, harmony and power of this vintage recalls the years of great guard 1947-1961 or more recently 1978.

The white wines are already developing quite remarkable floral fragrances and will live up to their reputation.
