Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1985 : an exceptional vintage

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Each year offers its share of surprises in the wine world, vintages are part of them. At André Brunel estate, we give you our opinion on Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1985 vintage.

1985 : a recommanded year

This vintage is known by the wine lovers as being an oustanding vintage thanks to a sunshine wich lasted up to the fall as well as perfect weathe conditions all year long, these reasons made the grapes to reach the harvest in an ideal stage of maturity. This was all the more the case in the Rhône valley from which the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine comes.

1985 Châteauneuf-du-Pape vintage : a highly recommended year

Considered a gem of this region, the 1985 vintage is a red aging wine with a delicacy and a balance which will make it compete with years such as 1945 & 1961. Aromas are generous & delicate, showing an intense red color and an extraordinary ability to age.

The André Brunel estate vintage called « Les Cailloux » is also made from old vines of the AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape and from its characteristic grape varieties. The combination of tradition and modernity as well as respect for biodiversity allow these wines fullfill their promises at their utmost. Therefore, these red wines offer a specificity similar to the 1985 vintage with a great aging potential.

The white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines

Fine and vinous are both endowed with optimal maturities as well as a beautiful freshness thanks to natural low PH.

  • The grenache variety express aromas of white and yellow flesh fruit (peach, pear, quince) and white flowers.
  • The very expressive roussane grapes reveal scents of exotic fruit, and of peach and apricot.

Thanks to a rainy water and a dry spring , the claret & bourboulenc two late grape varieties, were harvested at full maturity, thus adding their elegant notes to the blend.

The red Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines

The 1985 red wines , as to them are characterized by very pure, intense complex aromatic scents.

According to the soils, the grenache wines exhale scents of the rapsberry, liquorice, garrigue, candied ginger black fruit & citrus fruit. The blend of the different grape varieties of the vintage permits to create « a deep complexity » , a harmony between the specificity of the grapes and the soil influence. These red wines present a dark intense color with very important levels of anthocyanins on the palate. The wines are ample, vinous and enhanced with a superb freshness.

In a single word : powerful ! The tannins are present, their texture is extremely fine and already very silky.
